DETAILS

A Beginner’s Look at Lichens: Lichens are fascinating organisms, and you see many varieties in NJ. If you have always taken a liking to lichens, join Waterspirit for this introduction to these fascinating symbiotic life forms. Use magnifiers to get a closer look into the amazing world of lichens. Marvel at their structure and function, study the variety of shapes and color, and try to identify some common genera. We'll bring samples to observe and if the weather allows, we will step outside to search for lichens here on the property. Bring a magnifying lens or loupe if you have one. We’ll have some to share. Presented by Pat Heaney, Assistant Director of Education at The Watershed Institute. Pat is an award-winning educator with over 35 years of experience in Environmental Education in NJ. She is a past president of the Alliance for NJ Environmental Education (ANJEE). Pat is a proud Girl Scout volunteer with the Girl Scouts of The Jersey Shore. She is an author whose third novel, Sage Across The River, was published in 2024. If you have a 10x magnifying glass or magnifying loupe, feel free to bring it. Dress for the weather. This program has both indoor lessons and outdoor explorations. *We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to engage fully. To request an accommodation or for inquiries about accessibility, please email water@waterspirit.org or call 732-923-9788
